Gbassalon Town

The project is to build and support an elementary school in Gbassolon Town, Bong County, Liberia. This school will provide children from five surrounding villages with much-needed access to education and improve the limited educational resources in this rural region.

We are currently still in the planning stages and are looking for sponsors and funding partners. Please contact us for more information.

150 STUDENTS

8 TEACHERS

6 GRADES

The facility will not only serve as a primary school, but also as a community training centre where local men and women will be trained in areas such as handicrafts and agriculture - a dual approach designed to uplift the entire community through improved educational and economic opportunities.

In addition to providing quality education for students, training for teachers and respectful interaction, the proposed school will offer additional educational opportunities beyond the regular curriculum, tailored to the specific needs of the village community.

1

School Life

The campus with the school building financed by donations is the heart of our facility. Each class level comprises around 25 pupils and has its own classroom. Teaching is based on the Liberian curriculum, which includes all the usual subjects in Germany, from science and mathematics to English, social studies and history.

Although people in Liberia speak many different languages, the language of instruction is English. The state final examination is taken after the 12th grade and in a total of 12 subjects.

2

Kindergarden

In the kindergarten and preschool, we offer Bong Mines' youngest children a safe space to learn and play together.

For the parents, their child's attendance at kindergarten or preschool enables them to pursue an activity that secures the family's livelihood.

Our School Feeding Program provided the children with a balanced meal three times a week. Unfortunately, funding has been difficult in recent years, so we are currently having to put the program on hold. We appreciate any contribution that will enable us to reopen the kitchen.

Our Teachers

Teachers are the be-all and end-all of every school. They are role models and educators and they accompany the pupils through a crucial time in their lives. We are very grateful to have gained such good, committed and warm-hearted teachers for our project in this difficult environment. Our teaching staff is broadly based and can cover all subjects in the curriculum.

We ensure that they are paid throughout the school year, including during the vacations - not a matter of course in Liberia - but we believe this is only fair, as our teachers should also be able to provide for their families during their time off.

The idea

A small community in the middle of Liberia's dense rainforest. There is only one road, dusty in the dry season and barely passable in the rainy season.

The people of Gbassalon Town go about their daily lives, farming and caring for the many children in the community.

But there is one thing they lack: a school. The nearest school is far away, and the journey by motorbike is long and expensive. They also need all the help they can get with the hard work in the forest, where palm oil is extracted and mangoes and coconuts are grown.

Uncle Roberts wants to change this and has a vision. A school for his community. He lives in Gbassalon Town and has lived there all his life. He has seen hard times and the terrible civil war did not spare the rainforest. He wants a better future for the children, he wants the children and adults to get an education and learn how to manage resources and generate income for their families.

Through his work with the medical NGO HELP LIBERIA, he meets Yonah Flood from Monrovia and later Barbara Neppert, who comes to Gbassalon Town on a visit to the region where she lived with her family 50 years ago.

Together they decided to take on the project and build a school and learning centre with five surrounding communities.

A plot of land is quickly found, but the funds are lacking. This is where KINDER AFRIKAS e.V. would like to step in, as we have already realised a similar project.
